Tapping into the universal experience of enjoying flowers, as well as my personal hobby of flower pressing, I aimed to design a textile pattern that shared this joy with the users of any space my textile would exist in. My mission as a designer is to connect humans to their environments memorably, and the presence of biophilia in curated spaces can be present in ways as minor as the upholstery on furniture, while still having the beneficial effects that organic design has on the human psyche.
This competition was opened to students of the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in their junior or senior year of study. This was a completely solo project and did not include guidance from any academic advisors.
The task was as follows:
"Design a unique, furniture-grade textile that can be used in learning and working spaces to foster engagement and a sense of joy among community members. This textile should serve as more than just fabric - it should create a mood, spark a conversation, and support the functionality and aesthetics of learning spaces."
Up to 10 colors could be utilized, and a minimum of 2 colorways was required. The design also needed to have a seamless repeat.
